VtH 400 - Garden Signet

Created sometime in the summer of 2017, this is one of the few oil paintings I've made.

My grandfather used to paint in his spare time. One afternoon, when I was at his place and looking for something to do, he gave me a small canvas and some of his oil paints.

I ended up sitting in his garden, surrounded by trees, flowers, and the pond with its fish and water lilies. I didn't really know what I wanted to paint, so I started with something simple: a shape.

Without a ruler or any other tools, I painted a geometric form — a triangle containing an ellipse and a circle. The colours were an easy choice: red and green, my favourites.

At some point, a small stone from my grandfather's garden became the centre of the painting. I attached it with a generous amount of oil paint, and there it stayed.

Looking at it now, I can see why someone might think of the Deathly Hallows or Sauron's Eye. I don't remember either being an influence at the time, though. Sometimes a shape just ends up looking like something you've seen before.
